The Dilemma Caused by Glenn Frey

The song that started it all.

Driving home one day, switching from station to station and this song's unmistakable intro comes on. Now, I've always been bothered by the lyrics of this song. Let me show you why.

Are you gonna stay with the one who loves you,
Or are you going back to the one you love?

Okay so let's assume there are three parties involved:
  1. The confused Girl.
  2. Lover AKA the one who loves Girl
  3. Lovee AKA the one Girl loves
We assume again that Lovee does not love ze girlaloo. Because if he did, then the answer should be pretty clear and we wouldn't be having this conversation - nor would this song exist.

But therein lies the perplexity. Okay, okay cause then it goes:

Someone's gonna cry when they learn they've lost you,
Someone's gonna thank the stars above.

Okay let's look at it from the only two probabilities - keeping in mind that:

      (a) Lover LOVES the girl, Girl not so much.
      (b) Lovee doesn't love Girl but Girl does (after all, he's the guy who "left her crying" and "made her
blue". Yes, I went through the entire lyrics in pursuit of enlightenment.)

Scenario A: Girl chooses Lovee AKA the one she loves, but doesn't love her back

Lover's gonna cry when he learns he lost you --- Of course.
Lovee's gonna thank the stars above --- Okay now why would Lovee do this if Girl chose him, when he doesn't love Girl anyway? -> Dilemma #1

Alright, let's switch things around.

Scenario B: Girl chooses Lover AKA the one who loves her (she, not so much)

Lovee's gonna cry when he learns he lost you --- See Dilemma #1. -> Dilemma #2
Lover's gonna thank the stars above --- Sure.

So there. Glenn Frey, you got some 'splainin to do.

Yes, I don't blog for a little close to a year and this is what I choose to write first. Hello again, blogosphere. Ah missed chu. :)

  1. Kaya nga The Dilemma ang title eh. It's a multi-layered dilemma, not as simple as we thought! :D

  2. Scenario A: Girl gets together with Lovee.

Someone's gonna cry when he learns he lost you --- Lover.
Someone's gonna thank the stars above --- The Girl, kasi finally she's with Lovee! Lovee gave her a chance! Note that the "Someone" in this line was vague. Would Lovee be thankful? Maybe, but doesn't make sense. Would Girl be thankful? Of course, bec she has one more chance.

Scenario B: Girl chooses Lover AKA the one who loves her (she, not so much)

Someone's gonna thank the stars above --- Lover.
Someone's gonna cry when he learns he lost you --- Er... I see the Dilemma now. Sneaky Glenn Frey.

    1. Ooh ooh ooh! Maybe there are FOUR parties involved, and the fourth one's Glenn Frey!

So Scenario A... nope. Nope. I don't have enough brain power left today to go through it. Dammit, Glenn Frey. *shakes fist*

  3. Hi Ms. Platon! I'm a former student of yours but I won't divulge my name anymore, I just want to comment my ideas :P

So.. Note that the pronoun is 'they' as to not point to a specific person and so that both scenarios can be applicable.

Scenario A: Girl gets together with Lovee.

Someone's gonna cry when they learn they've lost you - Lover, obviously losing the Girl the moment she gets together with Lovee
Someone's gonna thank the stars above. - Girl. cause she got the Lovee.

Scenario B: Girl gets together with Lover.

Someone's gonna cry when they learn they've lost you - Girl. cause she knows she'll lose the Lovee when she gets with the Lover. I mean, if you look at it, it still counts as losing someone right? like when you settle, you know there's a part you'll lose in doing so: your real goals. :P
Someone's gonna thank the stars above. - Lover.

As we can see the Lovee's feelings are not involved here. :)) The Dilemma's only occurring on Girl and Lover. Hehe :P
